What Does it Mean to “Birth Differently?”

At My Birth Choices, our tagline is simple:

Birth Differently.

But what does that actually mean?

When we encourage women to birth differently, we are not suggesting that there is only one right way to give birth.

Every mother,

every baby,

and every family is unique.

Instead, we are inviting women to

pause,

ask questions,

and intentionally prepare

for one of the most transformative experiences of their lives.

In many ways, “birth differently” means choosing a different path than what has become common in our culture.

For many women, pregnancy begins with a positive pregnancy test followed immediately by a phone call to the nearest clinic or hospital. An appointment is scheduled, a provider is assigned, and the process begins without much thought given to an important question:

What matters most to me?

Before choosing a care provider, we believe every woman deserves the opportunity to understand her values, preferences, goals, and options. The provider who is a perfect fit for one family may not be the best fit for another. “Birth differently” means making choices that align with your unique vision for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

“Birth differently” also means surrounding yourself with knowledgeable support.

Too many women enter labor without someone by their side who is deeply familiar with the birth process. Research consistently shows that continuous labor support—especially from a trained doula—is associated with improved outcomes. Women supported by doulas are more likely to experience spontaneous vaginal birth, less likely to have a cesarean birth, often have shorter labors, and report more positive feelings about their birth experience. Continuous labor support has also been associated with lower use of pain medication and fewer interventions. (Cochrane)

“Birth differently” also means challenging the assumption that our nation’s cesarean birth rate should simply be accepted as normal.

Today, more than 30% of births in the United States occur by cesarean surgery. While cesarean birth is sometimes necessary and life-saving, many women are surprised to learn how greatly birth outcomes can be influenced by preparation, support, care provider choice, and birth setting. “Birth differently” means learning about those factors before labor begins so you can make informed decisions along the way.

Most importantly, birth differently means changing the way we think about birth itself.

For generations, many women have been taught to fear birth. We hear stories that focus on pain, complications, and loss of control. We often approach birth expecting something to survive rather than something to experience.

But birth is so much more than a medical event.

Birth is a rite of passage.

It is the moment a baby is born, but it is also the moment a mother is born. It is an experience that has the potential to reveal strength, resilience, intuition, and courage that many women never knew they possessed.

No matter how your baby arrives, birth has the power to transform you and your family for a lifetime.

When we say “Birth Differently,” we are inviting you to approach birth with

curiosity instead of fear,

preparation instead of uncertainty,

and confidence instead of simply hoping for the best.

Because when women understand their options, clarify their values, and prepare with purpose, they are better equipped to make decisions that feel right for them.
